Botox for TMJ & Headaches
For jaw clenching, and the headaches that follow it.
What it is
Dr. Anderton offers Botox therapy for temporomandibular joint disorders and the headaches that come with them. It is used to relax the jaw muscles that clench and grind, which for many people is what is driving the pain.
A TMJ disorder is a problem with the joint and muscles that work your jaw. It shows up as jaw pain, clicking, difficulty opening wide, and very often as headaches around the temples that people mistake for something else. Where the cause is muscular, small injections into the muscles that do the clenching can reduce how hard they pull, which reduces the pain and the headaches.
What it does for you
Fewer tension headaches
When the headaches are driven by clenching, easing the clench eases the headache.
Less jaw and temple soreness
The muscles that ache after a night of grinding are the ones being treated.
Works alongside a night guard
It is not a replacement for a guard. For many people the two are used together.
No downtime
It is an in-office appointment. Most people go back to their day straight afterwards.
Is this the same thing as cosmetic Botox?
It is the same medication, used for a different purpose and injected into different muscles. Here it is being used to reduce muscle activity in the jaw, not to smooth skin.
How long does it last?
Effects are temporary and wear off over time, so treatment is repeated. Dr. Anderton will talk you through the interval that suits your case at your consultation.
Am I a candidate?
That depends on what is actually causing your pain, which is what the consultation is for. If your symptoms point somewhere else, we will tell you that rather than treat you for the wrong thing.
What does it cost?
Cost depends on what is involved in your case. Call 806-495-3600 and we will give you a figure before you commit to anything.
